Support Group If You Fall On Hard Times, The Architects Benelovent Society Could Help

Some RIBA members may already familiar with the work of the Architects Benevolent Society (ABS) and may have experienced its work firsthand. However, many members are unaware of who we are and how we could be of help. The Society was set up in 1850 by leading architects of the day to help their colleagues and dependent 'in necessitous circumstances'. This remains our mission today. The majority of the Society's income is derived from investments, although an increasing amount donated by members of the profession either as one-off donations or regular standing orders. One in six of the people helped by the ABS is under the age of 35 and half are under the age of 65 according to the Society's president, Ken Shuttleworth. He says: 'The demographics are changing with improvements in medical care; younger people who injure themselves or contract serious illnesses are surviving but often need care which is not available through the state system.'
