Conning from the dense urban conurbation of Mumbai, it's no surprise that practice partner Bijoy Jain chose to draw on the particular issues and social conditions that the city gives rise to, and he needed to look no further than the view out of the office's rear window for inspiration. 'It's true to say that about 50% of Mumbai is not officially documented on any map of the city, and slotted between all the official structures are countless "illegal" ones, taking up every inch of the unused space', he explains. 'Among the warehouses behind our offices are many such spaces for habitation, selling andrnworshipping; complex spaces wrought out of tight sites that served to be the driver for our design'.
