PERFECT MOMENT FOR CHANGE

Filling in the RIBA Future Trends survey each month I wonder how much it is a poll of optimism, and so skewed by hopefulness. On what exactly should we base our expectation that workload will rise or fall in the next three months? However, scoring 22 contractors' pre-qualification questionnaires this month gave me a more frank insight into the health of the construction industry. The default request for three years accounts reveals reductions in turnover from 2007/08 to 2008/09 of up to 50% are not uncommon. Those with accounts for 2009/2010 showed no sign of recovery. If architects generally work on a percentage fee, the direct consequences are clear.
