Illness-Related Concerns in Caregivers of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Children with Depression

This article examines concerns expressed by caregivers facing childhood depression. Thirty-five primary caregivers of children with depression completed a semistructured interview during a psychiatric hospitalization and 2-6 weeks later. Caregivers listed concerns about their child's depression and rated their illness-related distress, their own emotional state, and family functioning. Concerns were reliably grouped into six categories. Concerns about current treatment, post-discharge psychosocial functioning, and overall distress decreased significantly at follow-up. Illness-related concerns can be meaningfully categorized.
