The Application of Linear Friction Welding at Rolls-Royce

Rolfs-Royce pic has used linear friction welding (LFW) for blisk (bladed disk) manufacture since the late 1990s. Blisk manufacture is currently the only production application of LFW within Rolls-Royce pic although other applications have been considered. Applications that have been evaluated include: attaching bosses to vanes or casings, fabricating near net-shape blanks {to improve material utilisation), assembly of stator aerofoil vanes into a ring and minimising material costs by fabricating blanks from different materials. This final application allows the majority of a component to be made from low-cost material with the high-performance (and expensive) material used only where necessary.
