Legislation to protect consumers' personal informnation collected over the Internet is unnecessary as long as these collection practices do no true harm to the public, executives from several major U.S. corporations told a House Commerce and Energy subcommittee July 26. However, they warned the panel that certain information -such as medical records, financial data, and information about children - must be protected and could support some limited federal legislation to protect privacy.
