Over the next year, U.K. financial service group Lloyds TSB will provide smart cards to some 750,000 commercial banking customers to offer secure online banking services through a deal with Entrust Technologies. Lloyds TSB's key online banking service will use Entrust's strong authentication and digital signature capabilities to implement a large-scale security infrastructure for smart card-based Internet banking. The Entrust solution will provide an "electronic stamp of approval" to verify that transactions have been securely and privately sent and received. The program will use Schlumberger Test & Transactions smart cards, which will provide added protection by securely storing the secret authentication and digital signature encryption keys.
