Hundreds of British and Irish plays were written and performed in the nineteenth century before 1880 but few survive. After that date comes a flood of memorable drama, beginning with playwrights like Ibsen (in translation) and four great Irish writers: Shaw, Wilde, Synge and Yeats. Then we have among many others O'Casey and Coward in the 1920s, Auden and Isherwood in the 1930s, Eliot and Fry, John Osborne and the Angry Young Men, Beckett, Pinter and Stoppard. The companion groups the plays into six categories: Contexts (specifically those of the early twentieth century); Mapping New Ground, 1900-1939; England, Class and Empire, 1939-1990; Comedy (ranging from Wilde to Stoppard); War and Terror (from the first world war onwards); and Theatre Since 1968. Mary Luckhurst, the editor, says that "feminist and postcolonial agendas dominate this volume". Certainly most of the contributors show their awareness of political and social issues that often shape - or that are raised by - the plays under discussion.
