First Supplement to James E. Walsh's Catalogue of the Fifteenth-Century Printed Books in the Harvard University Library

The late James E. Walsh spent nearly 50 years at Harvard University's Houghton Library, much of it as a cataloguer. One of that now increasingly rare breed of "scholar-librarians", his crowning achievement was A Catalogue of the Fifteenth-Century Books in Harvard University Library (Walsh, 1991-1997) completed in five volumes. This recorded 3,517 editions in 4,187 copies held in all libraries of the Harvard system. Incunabula were meticulously catalogued in four country volumes (Books Printed in Germany, German-Speaking Switzerland and Austria-Hungary; Books Printed in Rome and Venice; Books Printed in Italy with the Exception of Rome and Venice; Books Printed in France, The Netherlands, The Iberian Peninsula, England and Montenegro. Hebraica and Supplementary Entries) sub-arranged by place and printer, with A Brief History of the Collection Cumulative Indexes rounding off the set. Possibly the most extensive and detailed catalogue of incunabula in an American library system ever produced, it contained far more information on the Harvard collections than in Goff (1964), otherwise the reference standard for incunabula in American libraries.
