Sometimes, indeed frequently, with reference books the simplest approaches work best. When one is trying to deal with a subject matter as vast as that treated here, then simplicity of approach becomes an even greater virtue, if not necessity. Its content is basically straightforward: more than 700 philosophical, religious or theological writings from the period of Alexander the Great to that of Mohammed are described and discussed in this single volume. The entries are only for individual works, arranged alphabetically by their translated titles, or in some cases by their best-known title in their original language.
