Regular readers of Reference Reviews will need no introduction to the Europa Regional Surveys of the World series, and this, the 38th edition of Africa South of the Sahara, maintains the standard which has come to be associated with this series of titles. The directory presents an excellent overview of the region and the challenges and ongoing problems faced by the individual countries within it.rnThis edition has been thoroughly revised and, following the same format as earlier editions, the information is presented in three distinct sections. The first section, entitled General Survey includes within it five signed analytical essays which provide an in-depth analysis of the region's current economic trends; an assessment of aid and development initiatives over the past 100 years; an exploration of state failure in Sub-Saharan Africa; an examination of China's growing interest in the region; and the historical context to European colonial rule.
