Dictionary of African Film Makers

The author of this book, Professor Emeritus of Film at Middlesex University, has written a number of reference works in this vein includingrnArab and African Film Making (Malkmus and Armes, 1991), Postcolonial Images (Armes, 2005), Dictionary of North African Film Makers (Armes, 1996), and African Filmmaking (Armes, 2006). His latest published work is an alphabetized listing of primarily African feature filmmakers, over 1,200 filmmakers in 37 countries. He is currently working on a companion piece to this dictionary, Issues in African Film.rnRepresenting over 5,000 films, filmmakers are also listed by country in a second part to the work labelled Feature Film Chronologies. In this part each country is represented alphabetically and then chronologically except for an introductory portion for each country which lists the number of films produced in each decade. In this way, the reader learns that Egypt, one of the more well-represented countries, boasts 382 filmmakers and over 3,000 feature films, including over 500 films in the 1980s. A further breakdown in the chronology lists each year separately and highlights the most significant films and their directors for a specific country.
