I guess Burke's Peerage and its ilk was, and probably still is, among the most feared of reference books. Few of us understand the difference between Peers, Barons, Knights and Companions; few of us have the patience to decode the cryptic and complex genealogical information; and probably most of us, in this egalitarian age, have antipathy, hostility even, to the subject matter of their heirs and graces. Coping with peerage enquiries certainly sorts out the reference tyro from the novice! Another recent cause for stumbling was the non-publication of Burke's for many years.
