"India and Pakistan", claims the text on the back cover of this Encyclopedia, "are perhaps the most dangerous neighbours on the globe", and given that both countries are now nuclear powers, and that they have within living memory fought three major wars, and continue in a state of perpetual tension, it is difficult to disagree. The Encyclopedia includes 270 entries, ranging in length from about 50 to about 1,000 words, devoted to personalities,organisations, countries, places, conferences, incidents and general subjects relevant to the conflict; the text is updated to the time of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in late 2007. Though as would be expected, most articles deal with the situation since 1947, earlier events are included if significant to its origins.
