As the name suggests, The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (IEP) is an online resource providing information on philosophy topics and philosophers. The Encyclopedia is a non-profit organization operating through the volunteer work of the editors, referees, authors, and technical advisors. The site was started in 1995 by Jim Fieser, a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee, Martin. The current version is co-edited by Bradley Dowden of California State University, Sacramento, as well as 28 area editors responsible for soliciting and maintaining future entries in their specific subject areas. The stated purpose of the site is to provide "detailed, scholarly information on key topics and philosophers in all areas of philosophy". Use of the Encyclopedia is free of charge and is available to all internet users worldwide.
