Brick is one of the most durable, versatile, economical, widespread and fashionable of building materials. For many decades the indispensable book on English brickwork was History of English Brickwork (Lloyd, 1925) (reissued in 1983) brought up to date by English Brickwork (Brunskill and Clifton-Taylor, 1977). This was not a textbook but a book in which "we attempted to provide ... an introduction to the delights of brickwork of all periods in all parts of England". This was updated by Brunskill in his 1990 book Brick Building in Britain (Brunskill, 1990). With the continued development in the study of brick building, increased interest in architectural history, a renaissance in the use of brickwork by architects, conservation work and "re-listing", Dr Brunskill has here published a new volume on the subject, revising the earlier work but "with chapters more detailed and wide-ranging".
