Mary F. McVicker's biographical encyclopedia Women Composers of Classical Music is the latest in a series of reference works from the last few decades devoted to female composers in the western musical tradition. McVickers provides brief biographical sketches of 369 female composers from Europe and the Americas ranging from 1150 to the early decades of the twentieth century; it does not include biographies of contemporary, living female composers. The book includes both well-known women in classical music such as Hildegard von Bingen, Clara Schumann, and Fanny Mendelssohn and lesser-known composers whose work has been largely overshadowed or ignored by music historians.
