摘要

I must confess to my own yardstick for judging the accuracy of any dictionary of quotations. It relates to the notorious aphorism "Anyone who gets on a bus over the age of thirty is a failure" (or variant), usually attributed to Margaret Thatcher (yes - that name again). But incorrectly, as web postings have shown ad nauseam - here, of course, the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject gets it right: the precise quotation "Anybody seen in a bus over the age of thirty has been a failure in life" is correctly attributed (in the category Failure) to Loelia, Duchess of Westminster (1902-1993), reputedly the model for Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond novels who (according to her obituary in The Daily Telegraph) summed up her life as "Rich as Croesus, then not a penny". Now, had she been Prime Minister ... what a thought!
