Urban design is best described as the management of private development through established planning methods and programmes and other statutory development controls. In recent years, there have been a considerable number of readers and textbooks on urban design, the best of which is arguably Urban Design Reader (Carmona and Tiesdell, 2007) (not to be confused with The Urban Design Reader published by Routledge in the same year (Larice and Macdonald, 2007)). However, the work under review seeks to present a more authoritative and comprehensive complementary text to these readers and the Companion to Urban Design has been set up with this intent in mind. The editors, in their Introduction, suggest that the subject "has emerged as an important area of intellectual pursuit, involving theory, research, and pedagogy" and the contributors to their volume attempt to support this theory.
