Offshore Ferry Services: A Useful Guide to the Shipping Lines and Routes

In 2010 Pen and Sword issued a guide to cruise ships (Smith, 2010) (RR 2011/277) and they have now followed it up with a companion volume by the same experienced author, devoted to the less exotic, but more essential, passenger and car ferry services of the British Isles. Services between places in Britain or Ireland (e.g. to the Hebrides or the Isle of Wight) are listed as well as those to the Continent, or between Britain and Ireland. River and inshore crossings are omitted, it being hoped that a later volume will cover them. Services purely for freight, and excursion sailings, are also left out. Within its chosen limits the book aims to be comprehensive, though it is a mystery that the Stena Line service from Scotland to Northern Ireland is excluded whereas the competing one by P&O European Ferries is included. The oblong format is a suitable one for the numerous coloured illustrations, but there are no maps; nor is there an index.
