Just over 12 months ago I was exploring what kind of cattle to keep and this book would have been a very useful first port of call. Introductory sections cover What to Consider (fencing, housing, etc.), A Bull or Artificial Insemination, Rules and Regulations, Acquiring Stock, Handling, Calving, Organic Farming, Common Ailments. These are followed by double page profiles of all the different breeds of cattle, common and rare, to be found in the UK and even beyond. Each entry comprises a full page watercolor painting of the head, followed by a description of the breed, further paintings (usually side profiles, mother and calves, etc.) and a summary table indicating origin, type, size and whether horned or polled. Toward the end, there are short sections on how to Milk a Cow, Dairy Products, Finishing, Cow-horn Products, Tanning a Hide and a short list of useful Web sites for further information.
