Cultural Politics: Resources for Critical Analysis

Culture is a broad and complex area of research that has grown in prominence over the past few decades. English, sociology, anthropology, history and political science are just some of the departments in the modern university that study culture. Its prevalence, however, is not merely academic, as advertising agencies, non-profits, activists, politicians and the public have a growing interest in critically analyzing the human world in which they live. T.V. Reed, the Buchanan Distinguished Professor of American Studies at Washington State University, oversees this free site along with one other individual who provide "design and technical support". The site is intended for "students, teachers, journalists, scholars, activists and anyone else interested in learning more about popular culture, digital cultures, social movements, environmental justice, and/or cultural theory" and aims "to further a progressive cultural politics of social justice". It is obvious that Reed is not just a scholar but also a supporter of the subjects he seeks to elucidate with his site. What is important, however, is whether this bias affects the content of the site.
