The World of Musicals: An Encyclopedia of Stage, Screen, and Song

This new ABC-CLIO encyclopedia is available in both print (two volumes) and, as here reviewed, as an e-book. The content for both formats is the same. The encyclopedia is intended for teachers, high school students, fans and producers who wish to learn more about this genre. It contains over 730 entries, with a focus on Broadway and off-Broadway productions, television programmes and films. Each entry begins with the title and date of production; the theatre, studio or network; the writers, composers and lyricists involved with it; the director; the choreographer; the cast; and the songs. A description of the plot and history of the production follows, along with a bibliography of print and/or electronic resources related to the production. Information on how to secure performing rights is occasionally provided. Other entries are on individual composers, screenplay writers, performers, lyricists, directors and choreographers; term definitions related to musicals are also included, such as off-Broadway, torch song and juke-box musicals.
