Machine learning and data mining are terms of which even those with limited computer knowledge may well have heard. This is because these rapidly developing fields (associated with "AI" or Artificial Intelligence) have been in the news through sensationalised disclosures about social media network, Facebook and now defunct UK company, Cambridge Analytica. Discussions and reports have centred on whether the 2016 United States Presidential election and the UK Brexit referendum in the same year were unduly influenced as a result of activities of which machine learning and data mining were central.
