Gilmore Racer

The kit box may say 'Gilmore Racer', but this model is firmly based on the Wedell Williams Model 44 racer that bore the sponsorship logo of the Gilmore Oil rnCompany. If you haven't heard of the Type 44 line of machines then, like me, you'll need to brush up on your 1930s era aircraft - you'll then quickly come to appreciate that the Model 44 was a famous little aeroplane in its day. Flown in the US by Roscoe Turner, it won many races and set a number of inter-city speed records between 1933 and 1935.rnFollowing its recent trend towards unusual ARTF subjects, and in particular aircraft from the 1930s, this 58" (1470mm) span version from Black Horse makes some very modest concessions to scale. As such, the overall impression is quite striking, a result of the obvious care and attention that's gone into reproducing James Wedell's classic thoroughbred.
