That utter determination to get your model in the air at some point in the working week, despite the winter weather, has long appealed to the staunch radio modeller. It resonates with our values and touches on a number of ideas which particularly appeal to we trad' Brit. types. We are unashamed anoraks when it comes to our toy aeroplanes. We like learning about our hobby. We like trying our hand at new craft skills. We see no shame in crashing a model and then building a new one. We adore seeing our imperfect but viable aeroplanes rise up and glide around the heavens. Mind you, our quiet delights and thoughtful satisfactions will be totally baffling to most modern humans. We see ourselves as creators and not merely consumers. Fear not, it was ever thus. It has always been the thoughtful radio modeller pitched against a sceptical world. We live in an impatient modern society obsessed by screen time, the quick, and the seeming. A society that does not quite get our concepts of diligence, patience and personal challenge. Shoddiness is the new cool. Of course, in return, we don't get the modern obsessions with shallowness, narcissism, and bling. Our true heroes are modest chaps in sheds who design and build things from balsa that actually fly. Most of our simple hand-crafted creations have zero cash value but represent fabulous riches to us and our modelling mates.
