THE AUTHORS have done their usual excellent job with the latest book in this series, which covers a route that for more than a century was dominated by coal traffic. Passenger traffic began early in the line's existence, but was hit and miss, with sections gradually losing passenger trains, although the southern end did see a return of such traffic in the 1990s with the opening of the 'Robin Hood' line services.
