The zone approach

Some photographs need significant adjustments to improve them. Every photographer has experienced the sun disappearing behind a cloud just before an important train arrives and getting a disappointing result. This month we describe an approach which divides the picture up into zones and applies individual adjustments to each zone. It is particularly effective for pictures taken in cloudy conditions and the resulting image can be surprisingly good. The same principles can be applied beneficially to most photographs, even those taken when the sun was shining.
