F&W Railtours ran seven 'Skirl 0' the Pipes' railtours to Scotland in the mid 1980s, each starting on the Friday and finishing on the Sunday (well at least in theory they should have!) All featured a variety of destinations and motive power, this article focuses on the one that started it all, 'Skirl 1'. On Friday May 7 1982, I made my way to Gloucester after work behind 47434 to pick up the train, a pair of boiler-fitted Cardiff 37s, one of which I needed 'for the year'. Let there be no mistake, I was looking for new locomotives for haulage, lines in the book or whatever you call it, and a tour like this promised several. The train was routed via Worcester and the Lickey and entered Birmingham via the Camp Hill line. With 15 coaches, we had assistance from the Lickey bankers up the incline but unfortunately for me, whilst everyone else raved over it, this was the same pair -37138/191 - as I had on the Bristol-Glasgow 'sleeper' the previous weekend.
