Founded in July 2007 through the merger of Amec Spie Rail and SECO Rail, Colas Rail is fast developing its railfreight business as an open-access operator. Paul Shannon investigates Colas Rail's background, current activities and plans.rnThe name Colas was first used in 1929. It was a contraction of Cold Asphalt, the first bitumen emulsion designed specifically for road surfacing, which had been invented in 1922. Today, the Colas Group is a major international player in the infrastructure construction and maintenance business, comprising six divisions: civil engineering, safety, waterproofing, building, roads and Colas Rail. The Colas Group is part of French multi-national Bouygues.
