Limerick-Galway service reinstated after 34 years

Passenger services between Limerick and Galway were reinstated on March 30 after an absence of 34 years. The new service was launched the previous day by a special train carrying the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, and assorted community and political guests. The train, comprising a four-car DMU set, 2707/08/09/10, departed Limerick at 1045 and called at all stations. Despite heavy rain, large crowds attended at all stations to welcome the return of their rail service and plaques to commemorate the occasion werernunveiled by local dignitaries. Passenger services were withdrawn in April 1976 when 170 hauled the last Ballina-Limerick train, although freight continued until 2001.
