D400 first saw the light of day, courtesy of English Electric's Vulcan Foundry Works at Newton-le-Willows and presented a complete change of EE profile by not having a 'nose' like the Class 37 and Class 55. This Type 4 was much more 'box-like' in appearance being far longer than previous designs at 68ft 6in. On its side was a plate denoting it was leased from English Electric Co. Ten years later when the lease expired, BR bought the fleet.rnD400 made its debut on September 231967 and was allocated to LMWL (London Midland Western Lines) on October 7. When LNWR was disbanded on June 17 1968, DO5 Stoke on Trent Division became its official allocation.
