As you would expect for a book of this price, it is a most substantial work, comprising 200 pages in a hardback format with dust covers approximately 12in x 11 in, featuring 140 of David Plowden's evocative black & white images. He is perhaps best known for his atmospheric photographs showing trains in the landscape and his ability to capture the final fling of magnificent steam locomotives at work in America and Canada. We see plumes of white smoke drifting across icy landscapes and witness the men who worked with these machines. The close-up shots reveal not just the most minute of details on the locomotives but also every line on a railroad man's forehead.
