Tiverton Junction station in Devon closed in 1986 due to the fact that it was nowhere near its namesake town which was served by a short branch. From the Down platform there was another branch, which led to Hemyock, some 7 1/2 miles away. This was the Culm Valley Light Railway and served local villages and hamlets as well as the dairy at the end of the line. Being a light railway, to keep infrastructure maintenance costs down, the maximum speed was just 20mph, but in a time of near non-existent car ownership, the railway was the villages' lifeblood and speed was not an issue. In fact, the line was unique in the fact that when it closed, the coaches still had oil lights; so slow was the branch that dynamos could not get to a suitable speed to generate enough electricity to charge the batteries to light the coaches!
