The theft of 1km of signal cable between Thurles and Limerick Junction on Sunday April 3 saw delays of approximately 60 minutes on Cork, Limerick and Kerry trains to and from Dublin Heuston while pilotman working was instigated. In recent years IE has been installing signal cable in elevated ducting alongside the railway rather than burying as before. The surge in copper prices in recent months has brought unwanted attention to such installations despite the bulk of the signalling network now being based on fibre optic communications.
