Metrolink hires a cover loco

The Manchester Metrolink has gone from strength to strength in the past few years and work is progressing on a number of extensions to this system. The original route ran from Bury into Manchester arid the depot was built at Cheetham Hill to the north of Manchester.A service loco was required for maintenance work and to act as a rescue loco in case of a tram failure and the contract for this was given in 1991 to GECT, and in turn this was sub-contracted to RFS at Kilnhurst. This was allocated GECT 5862/RFS V337.It was a multi-purpose unit -basically a 4wDH fitted with a hydraulic crane at the front and an inspection platform on the cab roof, so that it could perform all types of work.
