As the birthplace of railways, indeed of the industrial revolution itself, Britain is still blessed with an unparalleled heritage of railway buildings, from great stations and bridges to architectural gems tucked away down quiet lanes. Many are still a part of the railway scene, whether public or heritage, but an increasing number are no longer needed. Then the blessing becomes decidedly a mixed one; demolish them and impoverish the landscape, or let them rot and spoil the view or find a sympathetic new use? This is part of the raison d'etre of the Awards themselves.Nowhere is this dilemma better illustrated than in the winner of the top Award of the competition, the Ian Allan Publishing Award. Wolverton Works had a long and distinguished history as first the locomotive works of the infant London & Birmingham Railway and then as the principle carriage and wagon works of the London & North Western Railway and its successors the LMSR and BR.
