At the start of the 1986/87 timetable there was an hourly Trans-Pennine timetable serving, at the extremities, Newcastle, Scarborough, Liverpool, Llandudno and Holyhead. There was even an overnight TPO between York and Shrewsbury that also had passenger accommodation. Such an intensive service required 17 locomotives each day; nominally these comprised 11 Class 45/Is from Toton (later Tinsley) depot, three Gateshead Class 47/4s and a further three 47/4s from Crewe Diesel. April 1987 saw locomotives allocated to sectors prior to the full implementation of the sectorisation of British Rail in an effort to reduce costs and improve efficiency, although whether the latter was achieved is highly debatable.
