German 'Warship' tour attracts the Brits

Over 100 British enthusiasts enjoyed a main line outing behind German V200.033 - the predecessor to the UK's Class 42 Warships - on a Munster-Wernigerode charter on January 25. Sadly on the way one of the engines failed resulting in the return trip featuring 211.054 piloting the V200 for the Wernigerode-Hamm leg. Damage to No. 2 engine was caused by a single valve seat breaking away in No. 5 cylinder and being compressed between the piston and the cylinder head, which in turn was cracked by the force allowing coolant to flow in to the engine and up into the turbo which caused the cloud of steam from the exhaust. The faulty engine has since been dismantled and parts of the cylinder head were found on the inside of the air intake, which means it is highly likely parts are also in the turbo. The liner of the cylinder is badly scored and the broken part of the valve was described as 'stuck like an ironstone' to the piston crown.
