The Class 40 Preservation Society celebrated three decades of ownership of Class 40s on February 16 by running both its locos, 345 and D335, top-and-tail on the East Lancashire Railway. It was February 18 1984 when 40145 arrived at the ELR after the bid to buy it was accepted by BR in December 1983. It was joined by 40135 on February 6 1989. The locos worked three trips all day, carrying wreaths in honour of Dave Harmer who recently passed away; the trains were the day before his funeral. 345 has just returned to traffic after three years out of use undergoing generator repairs. The main line certified loco, the only 40 passed to haul trains on Network Rail, is still being 'run in' after its enforced lay off and as yet no main line charter has been finalised although the CFPS is talking with West Coast Railways over such a train.
