Ballater station destroyed

Most of the former royal station at Ballater, now a restaurant and museum, was destroyed by fire on 12 May, just after 0200. Around 90% of the wooden structure, which included a shop, restaurant and a museum has been destroyed. Firefighters did manage to save a replica of a royal carriage. The £450,000 museum attraction opened in 2008. The station was opened in October 1866 by the Great North of Scotland Railway and was the nearest station to Balmoral Castle so contained Queen Victoria's waiting room. It closed in February 1966. It is the second serious fire in almost as many weeks. The former Midland Railway Desford Colliery signalbox at Hammersmith Junction, Midland Railway-Butterley, was destroyed in an arson attack on Easter Monday. It is the latest in a string of arson attacks at the MR-B, which has seen its model railway and a Midland Pullman destroyed.
