Ruston & Hornsby Survivors

THE LAST place in the UK to use the older style Ruston & Hornsby locos was the Port of Sunderland's South Dock. It employed two Type 165DE locos, RH 395294 built in 1956 and RH 416210 built in 1957. There has been no regular rail traffic for a number of years, but both locos were maintained in full working order. Over the last couple of years Network Rail has upgraded the track into the docks for the possible resumption of rail traffic, and both locos were used during the work. It was thought the locos would be retained for working future traffic, but it has been decided that they are no longer required. At the end of December 2016 both entered preservation at the Bowes Railway, where they will prove a useful addition to the fleet. Names have also been allocated, with cast nameplates fitted to the cab sides - RH 395294 PINKY and RH 416210 PERKY.
