The RHTT season for the York-based Type 1s started on October 16, 2016, but sadly they didn't get off to the best of starts with all four examples failing during the period. 20308 failed with an air leak at Wakefield on October 17 while working with 20312. It was soon discovered that the brakes had been binding on for some time and had caused wheel flats. The 20 was sidelined for repairs until October 27, when it returned to action with 20303. The same problem recurred again that night and the 20 was sent to Derby in the early hours of November 2 for repairs on the wheel lathe.
