Seven Dead in Croydon Tram Crash

Seven people were killed after a tram forming a New Addington to Wimbledon service derailed at Croydon in south London at around 0610 on November 9,2016. The tram (one of the 1998 Bombardier-built Flexity Swift vehicles) derailed as it rounded a sharp curve on the approach to the Sandilands stop, east of Croydon, where the New Addington branch joins with the route from Beckenham Junction and Elmers End. The left-hand curve has a speed limit of 20km/h, although the line approaching it has a speed limit of 80km/h. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch later revealed that the tram was travelling at around 69km/h when it left the track.
