Ethiopia-Sudan Feasibility Railway Study Gets Funding

The African Development Bank’s Board ofDirectors has approved a $1.2 million grant toEthiopia’s government to finance a feasibilitystudy for construction of a standard-gaugerailway (SGR) link between Ethiopia andneighbouring Sudan. The grant, from theAfrican Development Fund, the Bank Group'sconcessional-rate lending arm, would cover35% of the total estimated $3.4 million cost ofthe study.The remaining funding will be provided bythe NEPAD Infrastructure Project PreparationFacility (NEPAD-IPPF) in the form of a $2-milliongrant, and by a contribution of $100,000each from the two countries involved. Thefinancing was approved in January. The twoyear,comprehensive feasibility study will assessthe proposed project’s technical, economic,environmental and social viability, as well asalternative financing arrangements, including apublic-private partnership (PPP).
