CSX withdraws from planned Howard Street Tunnel expansion in Baltimore

Plans to expand the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore came to a halt as CSX has decided not to pursue the project. Height restrictions within the 121-year-old tunnel prevent the shipment of double-stacked intermodal containers by rail to and from the Port of Baltimore. The tunnel is also one of the last impediments to a once-held CSX vision of having a fully double-stack cleared rail corridor between Florida and New York.
