What can technology do for the railroad industry? The Association of American Railroads sponsors research and development programs intended to improve safety and lower the overall cost of railroading through improved technologies. The advanced freight car truck program being conducted by Transportation Technology Center, Inc., demonstrates that new sus- pension designs can meet the requirements. However, implementation will be difficult unless partnerships are forged to maximize investment dollars and minimize costs for operators, purchasers, and designers of new equipment. The cost models presented here are easily adaptable to any specific railroad operation in North American service.
