It is said that unionized companies deserve their unions. The fact that most short lines are not unionized suggests larger railroads have a lot to learn from their sardine-sized partners about treating employees with respect. But even among short lines where managers and employees collaborate, unions have an interest in gaining new members. Union organizers are being trained for the task at the George Meany Labor Center in Silver Spring, Md., and intend to focus greater resources on increasing their representation of the nation's 500 short lines, of which only about 20% have union contracts.
