CP + DM&E = new PRB line?

The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern's plans to build a new rail line into the rich coalfields of the Powder River Basin took an interesting turn last month when Canadian Pacific announced its intent to buy the 2,500-mile rail system for $1.48 billion in cash plus contingency payments of up to $1 billion. Those payments include $350 million if construction starts on a PRB coal line before Dec. 31, 2025, and another $707 million "when specified volumes of coal have been moved."rnCP's purchase includes DM&E and its sister railroad, the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern. The system includes 1,000 employees, 7,200 railcars, and 150 locomotives. The sale was expected to close by some time in November, although it is subject to STB review and approval.
