ScotRail's 'scenic' Class 153s delivered to Corkerhill depot

THE first three of five single-car Class 153 diesel multiple units for ScotRail have arrived at Corkerhill depot, as their entry into traffic draws near. They are being converted to 'active travel' DMUs by Brodie Engineering at Kilmarnock, for use as 'scenic trains' on routes including the West Highland Line. Leased from Angel Trains, the '153s' are having their seating capacity reduced, creating space for cycles and large sporting equipment. Each DMU will be paired with other SR Sprinters. They will have 24 seats (20 around tables and four airline-style), with the rest of the vehicle able to carry up to 20 cycles via custom-designed racks, sporting equipment and large items of luggage. There are spaces for tandem cycles as well as an e-bike charging socket - a first for a UK train.
